Yes I found this very strange. Bread is my go to for breakfast (toast) and lunch ( sandwiches)

I can’t seem to find bread to my taste, though. The default in Japanese bakeries and supermarkets is 食パン (shokupan) — sweet, fluffy milk bread sold in packs of 4, 5 or 6 super-thick slices.
