Who is My Favourite Comedian and Why?
Sharing her with you…
I used to love stand-up comedy. I’d win free tickets almost every time I entered a competition so I saw a lot of comedians, some impro and some comediennes. Guess who I loved the most? Yes, the latter. I don’t know what it is about comediennes but I’ve never seen one I haven’t loved! Maybe I can relate to their world?
I was introduced to Judith Lucy, Kitty Flanagan and Rosie Waterland by my daughter, Keeley. They’ve all written books which are sad and funny at the same time. Judith Lucy’s hilarious memoir The Lucy Family Alphabet and the sequel Turns Out I’m Fine are almost as good as her on-stage stand-up routine. I’ve seen her a few times and she always has new disastrous men and relationship stories to tell — maybe that’s why I relate.
Kitty Flanagan’s gigs are similar to Judith’s in she talks about her life as a single 50-something. They are both the same age. Kitty has written several books Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies a series of funny true stories followed up by The Rules of Life series. These are hilarious — I don’t know how she thinks of these rules. She’s even funnier on stage. Her audiences are almost all female with a few unwilling husbands sprinkled in the audience.
