Valentine’s Day wasn’t a thing when I was a teenager way back in the 60s. We’d heard of it but that’s about all.
I got my first Valentine’s Day present from my husband in the 80s. A dozen long-stemmed roses. They cost $78. (What a great memory I have for detail!)
I was angry at him because we were poor and that money would have been better spent on food. I would have appreciated a single rose far more – or maybe help with the housework. The roses lasted a few days, then died. Our love followed a few years later but I never got another present from him! he couldn’t cope with my lack of delight at receiving the twelve beautiful long-stemmed roses.
It might be a different story now that I’m not focussed on feeding a family. All Valentine’s gifts welcome — especially if they’re roses!
