After reading estow76 (Esther)’s story, I remembered this night. Don’t read any further, Esther!

It was Keeley’s 18th birthday party — not a huge affair — a few friends and some alcohol. It’s legal here at 18. Everyone was having a good time. About midnight, Keeley and her friend decided they’d go for a swim to cool off — it’s November so pretty hot even late at night — even hotter if you’re drinking.

They are in the pool for a while when Keeley comes running upstairs shouting — There’s a snake in the pool. It swam between us, didn’t it, Shelley?

You must have been hallucinating. How much have you had to drink? Or smoke?

I had smelled pot earlier in the evening. Anyway, I wasn’t going down the back yard in the middle of the night to check for alleged snakes.

I forgot all about the snake in the pool until I was cleaning the filter basket the following day. There was not one, but three drowned baby browns. Thank goodness, they were dead. Thy had managed to get into the pool, but couldn’t get out.

Brown snakes are a highly venomous variety of Australian snake — I’m not sure how venomous the babies are but I was glad they were dead. I didn’t want…
