Was This Bauble A Test of My Love?

I’ve received some very weird presents over the years. I really can’t decide which one was the strangest. Maybe it was my first birthday that I celebrated with John. You name it — he gave it to me.

Just one gift would have been lovely. It would have shown me that a) he actually remembered my birthday b) he had put some thought into its purchase and c) he had been listening to my stories. One of the presents ticked all of these boxes.

A helicopter ride

I had mentioned I had bought a helicopter ride over Paris from Groupon but never experienced it. So did he buy a helicopter ride over Paris? I wish! But he did take me on a helicopter flight over Brisbane.

It was terrifying. So that’s off the bucket list. I won’t be doing that again.

A birthday dinner

Somewhere along the way I must have mentioned that I’d never been to the Summit Restaurant at Mt Coot-tha so after the helicopter, we went out to dinner there. No expense spared! I had never had such extravagant gifts in my whole life!

But it didn’t end there!

When we arrived back at his place, there were happy birthday helium-filled balloons, perfume, a huge bouquet of roses, Lindt chocolates, Veuve Cliquot champagne, and a negligée from Kitty Amour. The price tag was still on it — $219.95! What extravagance just to wear to bed. Maybe he didn’t like my K-mart nighties saying “…but first, coffee”.

Oh I forgot the jewellery! A matching silver pendant and earrings from Swarzovski. He had overwhelmed me with every gift imaginable.

Our first Christmas

Naturally, I was really looking forward to our first Christmas. I was on tour in Turkey that Christmas and he gave me my gift before I left.

The strangest gift I’ve ever received.

A delicate Christmas bauble in the shape of a heart with my name inscribed on it which I had to carry with me for 10 whole weeks travelling around Europe..

I hated that bloody thing but looked after it like it was a newborn babe, wrapping it in multiple layers of tissues and putting it inside a tissue box to prevent it from breaking.

Such was the nature of the man. From gifts fit for a princess to pauper presents in the space of six months!

What’s the strangest present you’ve ever received?

Was the delicate, extremely fragile bauble some sort of a test of my love for him? After the extravaganza of my birthday gifts, would I be equally impressed with a single bauble?
