The only thing I've visited in England that bitterly disappointed me was Stonehenge. Too touristy and I can recommend other ancient rock sites. Bath and York and Chester are all accessible by train and have lots of history. If you're at all interested in World War 2 history, Bletchley Park is fascinating and reachable by train from London too.
