The Most Awkward Situation I’ve Ever Been In

Awkward? Me? Never! Well, I’m racking my brain to think of a time that I felt awkward. Keeley could probably think of a few. I’m thinking back through the years until I come to the time I was 18 and at my girlfriend’s house for a party. Most of the partygoers had gone home and there were six of us first-year uni students upstairs sitting around having coffee. In those days, 21 was the legal drinking age.

It was late almost midnight from memory when my father comes roaring up the stairs shouting abuse at me and telling me to get into the car as he was taking me home immediately. “Don’t you remember you have a boyfriend!”(who was on holiday with his parents.)

I was mortified. I was chatting to a lovely guy, Angus Hopkins, who had just come out of hospital after a motorbike accident and I had been massaging his back most of the evening. Thank God Dad didn’t turn up earlier!

My boyfriend, who two years later became my husband, returned from holiday and Angus carefully avoided me every time he saw me.

I drove home with Dad in silence but I remember getting out and shutting the gate after Dad drove under the house and singing Johnny Mathis’ Wonderful, Wonderful quite loudly. I was told to shut up in no uncertain…
