CAR ACCIDENTS
My Third Car Accident
I didn’t do it!
But it was my fault. It had been two years since my last accident. We had moved to Mackay and I was still driving my little yellow Mazda Ute. It had been repaired. This particular day, I had my two youngest in the car with me. No seat belts. The eldest used to ride in the tray at the back to and from school.
I was the PR officer for my son’s school. I called into the school to drop off my report for the local newspaper. I had actually forgotten that I used to write way back then. I was miffed because the principal wanted to check it before it was submitted for publication. He wasn’t checking for spelling or punctuation — he wanted to make sure I hadn’t said something I shouldn’t!
Back to the story. I left the two kids aged 4 and 2 in the car. Don’t think me a bad mum — I could see them from the principal’s office — and I was going to be in and out. I saw the car roll forward and stop when it hit the Mini parked in front of it. I ran out to check the kids were ok.
They thought it was fun. A real life bumper car ride. One of them had managed to take off the handbrake! I went back in to the school to find out whose car it was. It was the Commonwealth Bank girl who came to the school once a week to collect the students’ school banking.
There was minimal damage but I left my details with her as I admitted fault. A week later, we received the quote for repairs to her car. It was astronomical. My husband confronted her father. All this damage could not have possibly be caused by me. He was trying to give the whole car a facelift at our expense. What a crook! We didn’t pay. There was no visible damage to my Ute!
Lessons learnt!
