My Most Hated Household Chore
Day 22 of Keeley’s writing challenge
This is also a difficult one. I hate all housework. I always intended to be a career woman who could afford a maid. I never actually achieved any of the careers I was aiming for as a teenager but became a teacher as a last choice. Don’t get me wrong. I was a brilliant teacher.
My dad remarried when I was 10 and I was now the eldest of 4 and, being a girl, most of the household chores fell to me. I had to wash the dishes after every meal, and iron all my own clothes every weekend. And on my school holidays, I had to clean the house top to bottom. And I mean top to bottom!
Ceilings, walls, windows (do you remember Bon Ami? Wipe it on with a wet rag and dry it off and polish the glass to a high shine) and the most hated of all — Venetian blinds. As if that wasn’t enough, my (step)mother would check my work and if there was any dirt I’d missed on the inside of the plastic tapes, I’d have to clean the whole Venetian again. It’s lucky I didn’t know any swear words back then or you would have heard them!
So, every house I’ve owned since then, the first thing I’ve done is chuck those bloody Venetian blinds to the shit-house! Of course when you’re renting as I am now, I can’t do that so I pull them right up to the top and leave the windows wide open. Look in at…
