August 2011

I was packed and ready for my “trip of a lifetime”. I was leaving Australia at the beginning of the September school holidays, and not returning till school started at the end of January 2012. I had begged my boss for all of fourth term off. I built up the courage and presented the facts to him. I had been working hard so I could have fourth term off — he only had to look at my figures to see that — and promised him it was going to be a “one-off” — haha!

I had organised someone to move in to help with my rent while I was away, but I needed some extra furniture for them — my friend over the other side of the city had a bed, mattress and TV she could give me for free if I was able to pick them up. I organised a ute but that fell through so, at the last minute, I decided to pick them up on the Sunday. Lexi came with me to help me load.

The mattress wouldn’t fit in my Ford Falcon station wagon so I just collected queen bed frame pieces and the old television set. Do you remember what TVs were like before flat screens? Bulky and heavy!

Out of nowhere

I was driving along the Gateway Motorway minding my own business — a road I drove a few times a week — when a car came spinning…
