My daughter lived in Tokyo for 10 years. She had expat friends from all over the world but they all spoke English. After a few years she went to university to learn Japanese not that she needed to but when she mentioned to people how long she’d lived in Japan, they’d say “ oh you must speak Japanese”. She was too embarrassed to admit she didn’t.
