Most of my devoted readers know I’m in hospital recovering from a bilateral knee surgery. What you may not know is that I’ve been helping my daughter for the past year.

When I say helping, I’ve been on call every day and some nights since Caelin was a newborn as her husband works long hours. I helped out by doing all of the washing — nappies, sheets, towels as well as all of our clothes — hanging out and bringing in. She folded and put them all away.

She made me breakfast, coffee and most meals. As well as a physical help to her, I was company and moral support. When I finally had to have my knees done, she cried. “ How am I going to manage without you?”

I’ve been in hospital for 16 days and she’s managed wonderfully well. She’s surprised herself — and me. She’s found the secret is being super organised. Today she visited me to bring me some clean clothes — as if she doesn’t have enough to do.

This afternoon, she was telling me about a Canadian friend of hers who’s married to an Aussie. They have a baby a couple of months older than Caelin. Her friend has no family here in Australia and is flying home to Canada to visit her family — without her baby!!!!!!!

To each their own, but we just can’t understand. Can you?
