I've been to NYC with my husband and children, but never felt unsafe. People would hear our accents and be super helpful. Once on the subway, my husband and I were discussing which station to get off and a really really black woman was so kind as to tell us and engaged us in conversation the whole way. We were very impressed as we had heard all the bad stories about NY subways.
