It’s National Screen-Free Week.
Go one week without a screen and write about it
I can and I have. I’ve been on cruises where wifi was either unavailable or was so slow you’d spend $1.50 before signing in. So I had screen-free holidays for 2 weeks. I didn’t have much to write about as I lazed by the pools and read a book, soaked in the spa or played trivia. If you think you can’t play trivia, I played up to 5 times daily. I wasn’t winning all of the time. The general knowledge ones are my strength so won a lot of those but never won the music or sports but still enjoyed playing. No screens here either. Didn’t go to the movies. Preferred more active pursuits — shuffleboard, table tennis, etc.
I’m going to be screen-free in the Philippines next month for at least four days when I’m doing a 4-day island hopping tour to uninhabited islands sleeping on the beach. I’m not taking my laptop so I’ll be incommunicado for a few days. I’ll have to take a notebook to write stories. So yes, I can live screen free if I have to, but really why would I want to? I have a truckload of wonderful writers here with whom I love connecting on a daily basis.
I don’t watch free-to-air TV but I do watch Netflix when I’m in the mood for a binge-watch. I grew up in a screen-free era. We didn’t get black and white TV until I was in my teens. I refused to watch it…
