What is normal?

Who is the person or group of people who define normal?

Is there any such thing as “normal”?

The Online Dictionary defines normal as “the usual, typical, or expected state or condition.”

But are there degrees of normality?

Can you be “kinda normal” or “normalish”?

When I was a kid, a “normal” family consisted of a father who worked, a mother who stayed home and looked after the children and cooked and cleaned and washed and ironed and did all those housewifely things, and a few children, rarely less than 3 and often a lot more. The contraceptive pill wasn’t invented yet or if it was, wasn’t freely available. It was common for families to have 6 or 8 kids.

It didn’t take a brilliant mind for me to realise our family was anything but “normal”. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realise the most interesting people are the ones who didn’t have “normal” childhoods.

These are always the people I’m attracted to as friends, lovers and associates. If I think my childhood was weird, when I meet someone whose childhood was weirder than…
