Is It Possible This Is Love?

I’m in love! It’s a one-way, never to be requited love, but it gives me hope. And I’m walking around with a silly smile on my face. My feet, which normally hurt with every step, aren’t even touching the ground. And how did this happen, you ask?

I went for an eye test to get new glasses. His name is Andrew and he’s tall, good-looking but young. Very young. But that’s not what made me fall in love in the space of an hour.

The longest eye test ever : 10 minutes eye test; 50 minutes conversation; a mixture of French, Italian with a smattering of Spanish. And of course English. English is his mother tongue: he has seven English great grandparents.

I can’t remember how we started on foreign languages — maybe he said something in French or Italian, and I automatically replied in French, but I was smitten.

It turns out I can make quick decisions about which slide is clearest when he said uno o dos and uno o due. When it’s in English, I take forever to decide.

His French and Italian are perfect, as is his conversation. We chatted about our favourite countries in Europe; his are Italy and Austria: where we’ve been, where we hope to go.

He’s wanting to get a long stay visa in either France or Italy, but he mentioned…
