I knew most of these from my grandmother.

Her list of no-nos was long: don’t walk under a ladder, don’t kiss under a threshold, don’t sit at a table corner, don’t open umbrellas inside the house, don’t step on a crack, don’t trim your fingernails at night, and of course, she suffered from triskaidekaphobia — she was afraid of the number 13.
