I haven't heard this theory before, but my whole trip is spent staying in different places. I can see how your suggestion to stay in two different places in the same city works. We stayed in a hostel in Sevilla for 3 nights ans then an airbnb for another 3 nights - a totally different experience in a completely different part of the city!
