Can Love Overcome All Obstacles?
Number 14 in Keeley’s February Writing Challenge
Well, from personal experience, obviously not. But maybe TRUE LOVE can overcome all obstacles. You’d have to talk to the couples who’ve been together forever and ask them how that’s happened — was it true love or was it just a matter of putting up with each other and being too lazy to pack up and leave? I know both types.
As I may have mentioned, I was a late bloomer. A studious, sporty, high achiever at high school who won a number of scholarships to University threw it all away for a boy even though he was two years older than I was.
He sat next to me in a Chemistry lecture to ask me about my friend, who I’d only just met a couple of days previously. She agreed to go out with him but didn’t like him at all. I hadn’t had any boyfriends in high school and knew nothing about sex. Suddenly, I had boys asking me out. In fact, I had two boys ask me to the Sports Ball. Unwittingly, I said yes to both of them. Poor Bob Lucy and John Henry — I went with neither.
Dennis O’Neill was the winner. I went out with him a few times but he idolised me, telling me I was beautiful etc. My low esteem just couldn’t cope with this, so I dumped him. How stupid was I back then? I still take a backwards step when anyone tells me I’m beautiful. How does one…
