10. Do I Have a Good Memory?

What do you think?

Scoreboard at trivia Photo by James Borlase

Our team name is Under The Pump. You can find us up the top of the scoreboard. It’s not unusual for us to come first at trivia. Why? Well, there’s some luck involved and some good guessing, but mostly because I have an excellent memory for facts. Stuff I learned at school mostly or facts I’ve learned when I travelled. Or things I’ve picked up from other people.

I grew up in Townsville and once when I mentioned this in a story, David Perlmutter commented was I one of the Powerpuff Girls or something like that. I remembered that, and last night, when asked the question “What animated series was set in Townsville?”, I shocked everyone by answering “The Powerpuff Girls.” So thanks, David!

Sometimes, I know something and I don’t know how I know it, it’s just in my memory bank somewhere and I literally “pull it out of my arse”. It’s been said that I absorb facts osmotically through my skin but I’m not sure about that. I was a good student — I wasn’t often top of the class but came second in most classes — except for French. I loved French and just absorbed the language like a sponge. Having a good memory and learning a language go hand in hand.

There’s one thing I can’t remember no matter how hard I try. I cannot remember a single joke.

Me on The Chase looking dumb!

I might look dumb, but I have an excellent memory. Sadly, I missed out on the creativity gene. I cannot cook, sew, crochet, knit, paint, draw, sculpt or do crafty things at all — but I do have a great memory. My biggest fear of getting old aging is losing my memory! What will I be without a brain?
